English Language Institute - Academic Transitions (AT)
University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware, United States
Undergraduate applicants (any major except nursing) can be conditionally admitted to the University of Delaware with no TOEFL/IELTS score at all; the ELI's own entrance assessment places them into AT1 or AT2, and completing the AT sequence - which carries real UD course credit - satisfies the English requirement and moves them straight into their UD degree programme.
What you need
- none required for conditional admission; TOEFL/IELTS optional and used only to pre-estimate AT placementOfficial FAQ: 'No TOEFL or IELTS score is required for conditional admission; however, submitting a score will help you know your placement in AT before you come to Delaware.' Published placement chart if a score is submitted: TOEFL 0-65 / IELTS 0-5.0 -> Pre-AT; TOEFL 65-71 / IELTS 5.5 -> AT1; TOEFL 72-78 / IELTS 6.0 -> AT2; TOEFL 79+ / IELTS 6.5+ -> Direct Admission, no AT needed. Students who submit no score take the ELI's own entrance assessment on arrival.
- 'All undergraduate programs at the University of Delaware participate in conditional admissions (except for nursing).' 'There is no minimum GPA requirement for students to enter Academic Transitions; however, all students in AT must have been conditionally admitted to the University of Delaware.'
- Single UD Online Application, which covers both AT and regular admission
- A $35 express mail fee is charged before International Student & Scholar Services releases the Welcome Package and I-20.
Deadlines
- Date not published Application deadlineOfficial FAQ states explicitly: 'There is no application deadline for any student that wishes to apply for conditional admission.'
Where it leads
Guaranteed, in-house progression into the UD bachelor's degree the student was conditionally admitted to (any major except nursing) once AT (typically AT1 then AT2, 2 semesters / 8 months) is completed; students starting at AT2 can finish in 4 months; an optional AT3 semester banks up to 11 further UD credits.
Visa
All I-20 forms for ELI programmes are issued by UD's own International Student & Scholar Services, not the ELI. Because AT is legally a 'pathway program,' the I-20's programme-level field reads 'Other: Pathway Program,' with duration shown as 8 months (extendable 4 months for AT3).
Things to know
No nationality restriction found; open to any conditionally-admitted international undergraduate in any major except nursing.
udel.edu's TLS certificate chain is broken for some clients; pages were still fetched directly from the university's own domain. UD ELI's Agent Portal describes the commission payment process (invoices, W-9/W-8BEN forms, payment vouchers) but does not publish an actual commission percentage. This is the only IEP found where the English phase itself banks real degree credit.
