What you need

  • IELTS Academic 6General TAFE NSW vocational course minimum; TAFE NSW bachelor degrees require IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0); Diploma of Nursing requires IELTS 7.0 (Listening/Reading/Speaking 7.0, Writing 6.5). TAFE NSW's own General English Program (up to 50 weeks, $340/week packaged or $420/week standalone) or English for Academic Purposes (up to 20 weeks, same rates) can be used to meet these levels instead of an external test.
  • Credit-transfer/guaranteed-entry partner universities named: University of Technology Sydney, University of Newcastle, University of Wollongong, Charles Sturt University, Australian Catholic University. Credit amount varies by course, institution and grades achieved (not a fixed percentage on the official pathways page).

Where it leads

Credit-bearing or guaranteed entry into a partner university bachelor's degree (commonly 1-2 years of credit, i.e. skipping into year 2 or later), or continuation into a TAFE NSW in-house bachelor degree.

Visa

Subclass 500 Student visa; Genuine Student requirement (see Australia Awards entry). TAFE pathway packages can be bundled under a single student visa application.

Things to know

No nationality restriction found.

This is the clearest 'cheaper route' in the set: a vocational diploma at roughly $8k-$27k/year plus credit into a bachelor's, versus $25k-$45k+/year starting a degree outright at university rates. Exact credit amount per course/university needs a case-by-case check, not a blanket promise.
